The Badger State
Originally designed for battlefield use in 1863, the Wisconsin state flag was officially adopted in 1913 and last
revised in 1979. On a field of blue with Wisconsin written above it and 1848 written below it, the state seal is featured in the
center of this state flag. The seal represents the main industries of Wisconsin—agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and
navigation.
Wisconsin shows loyalty to the United States in many ways on the flag. In the center of the seal is a U.S.
shield, with the National motto written around it. The 13 stars below the seal signify the original states of the Union. The
word "Forward" is written below "Great Seal" as is a daily reminder of Wisconsin's continuous effort to
be a national leader.
